You can hear a smile. And we don't mean that in any kind of hippy 'I can sing a rainbow' kind of way. Let alone some kind of drugged-out 'I can smell spiders coming out of my sandwich' sort of way. It's just one of those common sense, makes-the-world-better, makes-business-better kind of things. Of course, you might be one of those people who thinks life should be terribly SERIOUS. But it's worth remembering that people like that generally provide the most laughs for everybody else.

People can tell
Not only smiling can be heard on the phone but other actions as well. When I worked in Japan we would bow when on the phone... people could tell if you were actually bowing on the phone, honest. So smiling and sitting up makes the person you are talking to feel they are important - its good customer service and is like a random act of kindness that they might not even realize. 09 March 2010, 12:00

today i was phoned by my godmother and i smiled when i answered it because i new i was able to thank her for the new look gift card that she sent to me for my birthday! i am going to keep trying to do this to make me a better person and a happier person to be around.! 03 November 2009, 21:10

World Smile Day
Harvey Ball creator of the world famous smiley face symbol in 1963, became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day. He thought that we should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would be World Smile Day.

- Smiling, laughing, and positive thinking have been shown to have a huge number of health benefits to both mind and body.
- Smiling reduces stress, which has been linked to a number of health problems, including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.
- When you laugh, your body releases endorphins. These are brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which make us feel happy. They are also a natural pain and stress reliever.
- Laughing reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and gives us a quick burst of energy.
- A good laugh can be beneficial to the lungs, boost immunity, and could even burn off calories.
- Smiley, happy people are thought to have more friends and be more successful, by appearing more confident and approachable.
- 'Simply using the same muscles as smiling will put you in a happier mood,' explains Dr Michael Lewis, psychologist at Cardiff University.
- Charles Darwin was one of the first to suggest our expressions may actually intensify our feelings. This theory is known as the 'feedback loop' or 'facial feedback hypothesis'. A smiling expression feeds back into how we experience mood, therefore making us feel happier or a joke seem funnier. Professor Fritz Strack, along with Leonard L Martin and Sabine Stepper, investigated this theory and published a study in 1988. This revealed that people who used their smiling muscles when presented with cartoons found them more amusing than people who didn't.
- Mark Stibich, PhD, a consultant at Columbia University believes smiling may also act as a stress relief.'When you're stressed a number of things happen to your body. Your pulse rate shoots up, your digestive system shuts down, and your blood sugar levels increase. But two things also happen that you have voluntary control over - your breathing becomes shallower and faster and facial expressions kick in. If you can slow your breathing down and change your expression, you may be able to turn around the stress cascade.'
