Action #055

Use a biro from start to finish

This action has been done 4,978 times which means 4,978 less half-used, half chewed biros lying in landfills

People throw things away too easily. They throw away their charming childhood illusions. Their talent. Their friendships. Their marriages. But more important than all these things are their biros. (Maybe). A plastic pen in a landfill will still be there in 50,000 years’ time, by which point the world will be populated by super-intelligent beings who have managed to solve all the problems afflicting the human race. Except that they keep forgetting to bring a biro with them.

    biro ink

in my class you can't get a new pen until you either lose yours, or it runs out of ink. Most people just take theirs home and say they've lost it but I try as hard as I can to use ALL the ink until it doesn't work. Its a small action but it will make a difference... maybe :) 28 July 2010, 07:42

    Bic have responded

Bic are offering a tenner to people who finish their pens as an incentive to be less wasteful. www.challengebic.co.uk. 14 May 2010, 13:16

Fountain Pen - go old school

I definately think this should be changed from use a biro to use a fountain pen. There are enough throw-away things in our life not to encourage the use of disposables. 08 March 2010, 17:34

    never use biros anymore

It's really difficult to use biros from start to finish, so I use pen now :) 01 March 2010, 05:52

    YAYYY :)

I have been trying to do this ever since I have read this action and from the start of Sixth Form. I'm proud to say I have finally achieved this and my biro has ran out ;D. Well kind of but if I keep on writing with it, even I can't make out what I just wrote. 16 November 2009, 22:43

Using a biro from start to finish

The next time someone asks you what you want for a present then ask for a nice pen. Because it will be special you'll take more care of it than you would the biro's that you put down or chuck in drawers and..... when it runs out of ink you can refill it with minimal waste (ie you'll only through away the refill and not the outer case too)

    Why not a fountain pen?

If you can't use a biro from start to finish (because, like me, you keep losing it or borrowing it with no return in sight), buy a fountain pen instead.

Sure, it's a bit tricky at the beginning. But you save a lot of money in the long run -- you can recycle the plastic ink cartridges (or buy a nice, old-fashioned bottle of ink - it's glass, so you can recycle it as well). There are some very good pens at nice, decent prices out there, so don't panic.

Plus, you can pass it on to the next generation. I know that because the pen I use nowadays was my grandad's. :)
