Action #103

Grow something and eat it

This action has been done 2,354 times which means we could have saved our food as much as 7,297,400 miles in journeys round the world, just travelling from soil to plate.

How we did the maths

We once saw a orange for sale that was packaged in polystyrene, shrink wrapped in clingfilm, labelled Citrus Snack and sold for £1.50. Plum stir crazy.

Growing oranges might be tricky unless you live somewhere warmer than Wigan. But carrots, rocket, beans and tomatoes are easy. It's cheap. There's no wasteful packaging. And no supermarket queues. WARNING: may contain bugs.

    Growing my own...

Last year it was tomatoes, strawberries, basil and radishes.

This year the strawberries are almost here, the basil looks great, the pumpkins are coming, and I have peas, courgettes, peppers, beans and salad all coming along nicely.

    Does growing Eggs count?

We now get REAL free range eggs from REALLY happy hens in our own garden. If you are a family getting through a dozen eggs a week, it could cost up to £170 a year for good free rangers. For that amount we've set up 3 girls in the garden and get upto 21 really good eggs a week.
The chucks are very easy to keep, needing only 5 to 10 minutes each day to collect eggs/little clean up/freshen food and water. Food and bedding are also very cheap. Selling the excess eggs to friends and neighbours also reduces your costs further.
Go on, give it a go !!!!!!!!!

    Growing something and eat it

I used to growing vegetables, herbs and fruit trees and eat the produce. It gives me euphoria eating it knowing it's pesticide free and organic. No pesticide means no toxins and chloro chemicals that negatively impact the environment. 17 February 2010, 05:29

    winter gardening

we had so much fun eating fresh food from our (and our neighbor's) very small city garden this summer that it was a sad moment when the weather turned and it was time to cut back the plants. but my lovely partner gave me an AeroGarden for my birthday and we are now having lots of fun growing 6 different kinds of herbs using this indoor growing system. so far, lemon basil is doing the best, followed by red rubin basil. next, we might try tomatoes or peppers...the company has quite a few different pod options, which should keep the winter exciting, while providing us with fresh, live food. 17 November 2009, 13:41

    Herbs and Spices!

I am growing a basil plant and a chilli plant. I love herbs and spices and was spending a lot of money on them at supermarkets. I decided I would try to grow some. These 2 are growing well and taste really good. I did have a corriander plant also, but killed it! Bit more difficult to keep alive this one!

I am also really happy that I am growing these items at home, as I do not have to throw away lots of packaging, which is really bad for the environment.

    Yummy Carrots

My daughter and I planted some seeds way back in March... since then we have been tending them lovingly, talking and singing to them (well Daisy anyway) and generally being lovely to the little plants.
Our autumn crop was awesome, we had potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, corgettes, basil, mint, and a big fat marrow... yum!
    carrots never tasted so good!
